Abstract
Classification and assessment of abuse and neglect in childhood and adolescence
Despite the great individual and social relevance of abuse and neglect in childhood and adolescence, there are still major deficits with regard to a uniform description and standardized diagnosis of these phenomena. Based on a long research tradition, particularly in the Anglo-American region, this article reports about criteria for describing different subtypes of child abuse and neglect as conceptualized in the current version of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10-GM) as the basis for further development of this classification system. Furthermore, an overview of internationally established diagnostic instruments for the differentiated assessment of abuse and neglect is given. The application of a unified definition of the different forms of maltreatment and the use of suitable diagnostic procedures would contribute to an improved data basis and support the derivation and evaluation of intervention approaches.
